Our Philosophy of Learning

Our programs are based on a concept we like to call "Free-Range Learning". If you've ever watched a chicken roaming around a farm, you'll understand the analogy. We believe that learning is an exploratory process that can happen anywhere and anytime, and often takes unplanned detours. A simple activity like digging up potatoes can lead to an impromptu investigation of earthworms and other soil critters.

Our programs are designed to make learning:
  1. Authentic. Learning in the real world does not occur in a vacuum. We take a multidisciplinary approach that brings together agriculture, science, art, literature, technology, history, and other subjects as we learn about the world around us.
  2. Hands-on. We believe that people learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process.
  3. Collaborative. All learners, regardless of their age or experience, have background knowledge that can be valuable to others in the learning community. We encourage participants to share what they know.
  4. Meaningful. Learners will become active participants in building the farm and our community, while building new knowledge that they can take back into their own communities.
  5. Fun. We hope all of our guests have a great time while they learn!
