Our Philosophy of Learning
Our programs are based on a concept we like to call "Free-Range Learning". If you've ever watched a chicken roaming around a farm, you'll understand the analogy. We believe that learning is an exploratory process that can happen anywhere and anytime, and often takes unplanned detours. A simple activity like digging up potatoes can lead to an impromptu investigation of earthworms and other soil critters.
Our programs are designed to make learning:
Our programs are designed to make learning:
- Authentic. Learning in the real world does not occur in a vacuum. We take a multidisciplinary approach that brings together agriculture, science, art, literature, technology, history, and other subjects as we learn about the world around us.
- Hands-on. We believe that people learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process.
- Collaborative. All learners, regardless of their age or experience, have background knowledge that can be valuable to others in the learning community. We encourage participants to share what they know.
- Meaningful. Learners will become active participants in building the farm and our community, while building new knowledge that they can take back into their own communities.
- Fun. We hope all of our guests have a great time while they learn!
